After taking a long break from working on my husband's family history, I discovered (from the award winners list) that there are entirely new tools on the internet for genealogical research and sharing. I chose MyHeritage.com and think this might be a great place to share my father's family history as well.
These sites also offer options for publishing (as does Ancestry Press, which is part of the venerable ancestry.com) so once I get the handle of scanning old photos and documents, the Wagners should have an easy way to share the raw data that my uncle has collected in 40 (!) loose-leaf binders.
As a research tool, MyHeritage seems to be a federated search engine, with 'Megadex" looking at "1378 top genealogy databases" and they do tell you which are or include fee-based services. Still, a ton of new directions to pursue, and with a name like Kaehler that can be spelled so many ways, I've got my work cut out for me! It does take a while for such a broad search to complete. I'll have to report on the results (the name Kaehler came up in 117 of those databases) later...
And then I'll be looking at the other award-winning genealogy sites, too.
A new thing
